At Chiswick Homeopathy & Counselling Clinic I offer both Counselling and Psychotherapy. People often ask me “what is the difference between the two?” They also ask me what kind of psychotherapy I practice and how would they know if that is the right approach for them. You can find answers to these and many other questions by following the links below.
If you are uncertain if therapy is the right option for you, you could call me and make an arrangement to come to meet me so we could have a discussion about it. The first ‘intake’ session, is free of charge and it is designed specifically for this reason. This free session will give you an opportunity to meet me in person and ask me questions before you decide if you want to start therapy. We will also discuss what troubles you and I would advise you whether I think you need counselling or psychotherapy and will explain to you how I usually work. The aim of this session is to help you decide whether or not therapy is the right thing for you and if you would like to commit to regular weekly sessions.
.What is the difference between counselling & psychotherapy?
One of the main differences between the two is that counselling is usually short-term (6, 12 or 24 sessions) while psychotherapy is longer term and often open-ended.
Counselling involves exploring one or a few specific life issues that are currently affecting your life or something specific that troubles you and affects your present way of being. Counselling offers a safe and confidential environment where you can explore your feelings, difficulties and distress or perhaps your dissatisfaction with life, or loss of a sense of direction and purpose. Sometimes in exploration of these areas one uncovers deeper seated issues that may need to be looked at before the presenting issue may be understood or resolved. In this case the counselling would turn into psychotherapy - as the “bigger picture” would be explored not just a specific problem.
Psychotherapy is a journey of self-exploration and reflection and it leads to a greater understanding and awareness of of who we are. Through this process we explore our purpose and meaning and become more conscious of our patterns of behaviour, our emotional make-up and our sense of Self which leads to a greater sense of self-awareness. Both the client and the psychotherapist are actively engaged in shaping these processes.
